Policies, Plagiarism, and copyright for kids
Hey kids,
Do you ever wonder how I choose the books and resources we have in our libraries? Well the Selection Policy helps me to choose the right things to help you learn. When choosing an item I:
1. Check to see if it has good reviews, like when you go see a movie.
2. Check to see if it connects to what you learn in school.
3. Make sure you would learn something from the book or resource.
4. Check the information to be sure it is good and true.
5. Check to see if the author and illustrator are good.
6. Ask myself if you all would like the characters, story, or information.
7. Make sure the item will last a long time.
8. Make sure it is not too expensive.
9. Ask myself if you all would like the pictures, illustrations, or layout.

Selection Criteria used to order items:
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a big word for taking or stealing someone else's ideas. If you take author's stories, words, or sentences, and say they are yours, you will get in trouble. Even videos, pictures, or music found on the Internet were created by someone else. So you can not say you made them.
At Easton Elementary, we respect others and protect their work. If we decide to use someone else's work or ideas with our own, we must write down who created the idea or work and where it came from. This is called giving credit or citing a source.
Use this citation maker below to help you give credit to others when you use their words, sentences, ideas, pictures, or music.

Copyright
Copyright protects works that you or other people create. Once you write a story, draw a picture, or write a song, that is protected by Copyright and no one else is allowed to use it, copy it, or say it is theirs. You have to give them permission to use your work. The same goes when you are on the Internet and you copy a song to use in a video you made. Before you can use that song, you would have to ask the creator of that song.
